Pravin Fernando acts in inquest for family concerning neonatal death at Lewisham Hospital where coroner finds neglect

22nd August 2013

Pravin Fernando represented the family in an inquest concerning the death of their baby daughter shortly after her birth at Lewisham Hospital. The baby had suffered hypoxic injury and there was a dispute amongst experts as to whether the injury was in the antenatal, intra-partum or post-natal period. The baby was due to undergo meconium observations following birth and it was found that the midwife had failed to perform the full set of observations. The coroner found the hypoxic injury occurred in the postnatal period and that the failure to fully complete meconium observations contributed to the baby’s death.  This failure amounted to neglect.

Pravin Fernando was instructed by Sally-Jean Nicholes of Leigh Day.
