Nageena Khalique QC is the Chair of the NICE committee responsible for the drafting of guidelines “Safeguarding Adults in Care Homes” due for publication in 2020

29th September 2020

The draft guidelines were published for public consultation in September 2020  and stakeholders have been offered the opportunity to comment until 1 October 2020. Abuse can come in many forms, including physical, sexual, psychological and financial. In 2018/19 there were 415,050 safeguarding concerns of abuse and neglect of adults raised in England, an increase of 5.2% on the previous year. Concerns about care homes raised during the pandemic suggest these figures may further increase. Nageena states that these guidelines are aimed improving knowledge and understanding of the roles of those working for or in connection with care homes and actions which can be taken to address concerns and in response to indicators of abuse and neglect. They also provide recommendations on training, policy, and to promote better awareness of safeguarding as a fundamental ethos of care home culture.
