George Thomas successfully defends Metropolitan Police in 2-week jury trial

18th October 2022

The claim concerned allegations of false imprisonment, assault, malicious prosecution and misfeasance in public office.  The Claimant alleged that officers had fabricated the grounds to stop and search him for possession of drugs and used gratuitous violence during the stop.  It was also alleged that, following a negative search, the officers had fabricated an account of him spitting at police and lied to the custody sergeant who authorised a strip search of him. Finally, they colluded in producing false witness statements which led to his convictions for assault and obstruction, which were only overturned on appeal.

At the conclusion of a two-week jury trial in Central London County Court, all allegations were dismissed and, although QWOCS applied to the personal injury claim, the Commissioner was awarded 70% of his costs. George Thomas was instructed by Sadie Seabrook of Clyde & Co solicitors.
